Visualization: Geo Maps

Learn about INSIA's Geo Maps Visualization feature.

Updated over 2 years ago

The geo-map represents a map of the world, with varying contrasts at different places to represent the data. In the geo map, the value of the metric belonging to a particular location is denoted by a dense shadow. The darker the shadow, the higher the number of the metric.

For example, You want to look for Spend by Country data. Where Spend is a metric and Country is a dimension.

Note: This is on sample procurement data. We don't set any taxonomies and INSIA will only read column names from your data. If you call 'Spend' as 'Expense', 'Expense' will show on the search bar. You can find the sample data by going to the top right corner of the platform and switching to 'Demo Mode'. There you can select 'Procurement' to see a similar visualization as below.

In the chart below, you will see how Spend by Country is represented in a geo-map. You will notice, Australia has the highest amount of Spend. Because it has rather a dense shadow as compared to the US, which has a very light shade because the value of spending in the US is less.

Geo-map is shown as the default chart when a single metric is split by a geo dimension. The change chart setting of geo-map allows us to change the chart to a line, pie, bar, or column chart. It further can be changed into geo bubble maps and geo bucket maps.

Lastly, while a Geo map allows us to generate i360 reports, and do a live drill down, but we cannot set alerts as the visual alert style followed in INSIA doesn’t suit a Geo-map.

There are more Map Charts available on INSIA, as follows:

  • Geo Map Bubble Charts

  • Geo Map Bucket Charts

Geo Map Bubble Charts

The Geo map bubble chart is very similar to the Geo-map chart, with the only variation being how it presents the metric’s value/quantity.

Let's take the previous example where Spend is a metric and Country is a dimension.

In the chart below, see how Spend by Country is represented in a Geo-map bubble chart. Instead of varying shade like the Geo-map chart, it shows a bubble at a particular location. The size of the bubble is directly proportional to the value of the metric (Spend) at that location(Country).

The Geo-map bubble is a variation of the Geo-map itself and is displayed whenever the Geo map is suitable. It has the same features as a Geo map, i.e. generating automated i360, and performing a drill-down, but cannot set alerts.

Geo Map Bucket Charts:

The Geo Map bucket helps in visualizing data when only one dimension is applied to a single metric.

Let's look at an example on the platform. If you had to look for spend by region the map shows the value per country through a colorful indent. Each country represents Spend data using different colors to enable differentiation.
